A 12-member congressional commission made up of leaders from both parties must pick the Architect of the Capitol by a majority vote. The person must be chosen regardless of political party and only for their fitness to do the job. The Architect serves a 10-year term and can be reappointed to more 10-year terms if the commission again approves by a majority vote. The commission can also remove the Architect at any time by a majority vote. These rules apply to appointments made on or after December 22, 2023.
