Capitol Police can go outside the United States when they are traveling with, or preparing to travel with, a Senator. Officers may go abroad to give security advice and do security planning, including advance work, but the Senate’s Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper must approve the trip first. While on those trips, they must not act as law enforcers. United States: the states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories and possessions. The Capitol Police get reimbursed for overtime, travel, and related costs from the Senate’s contingent expenses account. Reimbursements go into the Capitol Police’s expense or salary accounts and can be used in the year received and the next fiscal year. This rule starts in fiscal year 2005 and continues every year after.
