Effective October 1, 1981, all jobs set by law in the Secretary’s Office were abolished except five: Secretary of the Senate; Assistant Secretary; Parliamentarian; Financial Clerk; and Director of Classified National Security Information. The Secretary can create staff and set pay, but each employee’s pay must be at least $1,000 less than the Secretary’s; contingent-fund jobs are unchanged.
