If the Senate’s Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper dies, resigns, becomes disabled, or is absent, the Deputy Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper must take over all duties. The deputy stays in charge until a new Sergeant at Arms is elected and qualified or the disability ends. A disability only counts when the Majority Leader, Minority Leader, and the President Pro Tempore together tell the Senate the Sergeant at Arms cannot do the job.
