Title 20 › Chapter 39— EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS › Subchapter I— EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES › Part 2— Unlawful Practices › § 1703
Stops States and their school systems from denying anyone equal schooling because of race, color, sex, or national origin. It says schools must not treat students unfairly for those reasons. That means schools may not deliberately separate students by race, color, or national origin. They must work to fix remaining effects of past segregation. They cannot assign a student to a farther school if that makes segregation worse than sending the student to the nearest appropriate school. Schools may not hire or assign staff in a way that discriminates by race, color, or national origin. They may not move students to increase segregation. They must help students with language barriers so they can take part in classes.
