Title 20 › Chapter 39— EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS › Subchapter II— ASSIGNMENT AND TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS › § 1757
Courts and federal agencies cannot order students to be moved between schools for racial desegregation in the middle of a school year. Any order to transport students for desegregation only takes effect at the start of an academic school year. The Secretary will make rules saying an "academic school year" is the usual start of classes that happens no more than once in any twelve-month period. This rule also applies to any order not put into effect at the start of the 1974–1975 academic year.
