Title 20 › Chapter 43— AMERICAN FOLKLIFE PRESERVATION › Subchapter II— VETERANS’ ORAL HISTORY › § 2141
Creates a national, government-funded program to record and keep video and audio personal stories from American war veterans. Congress notes how many served: 4,700,000 in World War I, 16,500,000 in World War II, 6,800,000 in the Korean Conflict, 9,200,000 in the Vietnam Conflict, and 3,800,000 in the Persian Gulf War. The Department of Veterans Affairs reports almost 19,000,000 war veterans live in the country now. Only approximately 3,400 World War I veterans remain, and of about 6,000,000 World War II veterans alive today, almost 1,500 die each day. The law says these oral histories are very valuable and should be saved. It names the Library of Congress, with nearly 119,000,000 items and the American Folklife Center, to collect, preserve, and share the recordings. The program will coordinate national efforts and help local projects so future generations can hear veterans’ first-hand stories.
