An Office of Indian Education must be set up inside the Department of Education. A Director, chosen by the Secretary, must lead the Office and report to the Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education. The Director must run Part A of title VI of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, lead and coordinate policy for programs that affect Indian children and adults across the Department, and help the Assistant Secretary of the Office of Educational Research and Improvement set research priorities about Indian education. The Secretary must give hiring and other personnel preference to Indian persons in the Office, using the same method as the veteran preference under section 45 of title 25.
