Title 20 › Chapter 56— AMERICAN INDIAN, ALASKA NATIVE, AND NATIVE HAWAIIAN CULTURE AND ART DEVELOPMENT › Subchapter II— NATIVE HAWAIIANS AND ALASKA NATIVES › § 4441
The Secretary of the Interior can give money to nonprofit groups to support Native Hawaiian or Alaska Native culture and arts. To get a grant, a group must mainly serve Native Hawaiians or Alaska Natives and must be officially recognized by the Governor of Hawaii or the Governor of Alaska. Grants should, when possible and agreed by the Secretary and the group, pay for research and teaching about the culture and arts, create degree programs, or set up cultural centers and similar programs. Any group that gets a grant must set up a governing board to run the program. For Native Hawaiian grants, the board must include Native Hawaiians and people known for their work in Native Hawaiian art and culture, and members must serve fixed terms. For Alaska Native grants, the board must include Alaska Natives and recognized experts, must represent the Eskimo, Indian, and Aleut cultures of Alaska, and members must serve fixed terms.
