The Regents must keep a high standard for art accepted into the Gallery and must promote public appreciation of both old and new art by holding exhibitions in Washington and elsewhere in the United States. They may ask for and accept private art donations and money to buy art. Money received must be put into a separate account with the Treasurer of the United States and can be spent by the Regents to buy works of art. To support contemporary art, the Regents may raise private funds, buy or sell contemporary works (or copies), hire artists and staff, give scholarships, run exhibitions, and take other steps to carry out these goals. Money raised for these purposes must go into a separate account with the Treasurer of the United States and may only be used for these activities. The Regents must not commit to spend more than the funds they have.
