§80q–11 Inventory, Identification, and Return of Native Hawaiian Human Remains and Native Hawaiian Funerary Objects in Possession of Smithsonian Institution

Summary

Requires the Secretary of the Smithsonian to find and list Native Hawaiian human remains and funerary objects the Smithsonian has. The Secretary must make an agreement with appropriate Native Hawaiian groups to return those remains and objects; those groups can include the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawai’i Nei. The Secretary must, as much as possible, follow the same steps used for Indian remains and objects. Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawai’i Nei — a nonprofit Native Hawaiian group incorporated in Hawaii on April 17, 1989, that advises on cultural and burial matters. Office of Hawaiian Affairs — the agency created by the State of Hawaii’s Constitution.
