§80r–5 Educational and Liaison Programs

Summary

The Museum Director may run educational and outreach programs that support the Museum’s goals. The Director must provide programs about African American life, art, history, and culture. Those programs must use digital or interactive technology and must work with elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools. The Director must also consult with the Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services about the grant and scholarship work described next. The Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, working with the Council and the Museum Director, must create several grant and scholarship programs. They cover improving museum operations, collections care, and management; internships and fellowships at African American museums; scholarships for people studying or training in arts, humanities, and sciences about African American topics; a program, with other museums and groups, to promote understanding of modern-day slavery worldwide; and a grant that lets eligible museums or nonprofit education groups increase an endowment that existed on May 1, 2003, to support education programs and traveling exhibits. Congress authorized $15,000,000 for fiscal year 2004 and such sums as are necessary for each fiscal year after that.
