Defines key words used in this chapter about teacher training and courses. A "field-based course" is a college course that makes students teach at least three lessons or lesson sequences to elementary or secondary students. An "institution of higher education" is defined in section 1001 of this title. A "master teacher" is someone with a master’s or doctoral degree whose graduate work included math, science, computer science, or engineering, who has at least 3 years of K–12 teaching, and whose teaching is recognized as outstanding or shown to improve student learning. A "mentor teacher" is a K–12 classroom teacher who helps train students in a field-based course. "Director" means the Director of the National Science Foundation.
