Title 21 › Chapter 1— ADULTERATED OR MISBRANDED FOODS OR DRUGS › Subchapter II— MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS › § 20
Barrels of apples sent between states, exported, or sold in the District of Columbia or U.S. territories must be one variety and meet basic quality rules. The apples must be well grown, hand-picked, the normal color and shape for that variety, and basically free of insect or fungal damage, bruises, and other defects except those caused by packing. Apples that meet those rules and have a minimum transverse diameter of 2½ inches, 2¼ inches, or 2 inches may be called the corresponding "Standard grade, minimum size." Fruit that is up to 10 percent below the quality rules can still qualify for the same standard if it meets the stated minimum diameter.
