Summary

Programs funded under this law must give special attention to projects that help women in developing countries join their national economies, raise their status, and support overall development. The goal is to integrate women into economic life and improve their income and productivity. Each year up to $10,000,000 from funds under this part and part X must be used, in addition to other funds and on terms the President decides, to promote women’s equal participation in development. The money should mainly boost women’s economic productivity and earnings. The law does not allow creating a separate aid program just for women. At least $500,000 for fiscal year 1982 must go to programs that support the original goals of the United Nations Decade for Women.

(a)In recognition of the fact that women in developing countries play a significant role in economic production, family support, and the overall development process of the national economies of such countries, subchapter I of this chapter shall be administered so as to give particular attention to those programs, projects, and activities which tend to integrate women into the national economies of developing countries, thus improving their status and assisting the total development effort.
