Title 22 › Chapter 6— FOREIGN DIPLOMATIC AND CONSULAR OFFICERS › § 258a
District courts and U.S. magistrate judges must enforce awards or arbitrations made by a foreign consul, vice consul, or commercial agent when they acted as judge or arbitrator in disputes between a ship’s captain and crew. The consul or agent must first ask the court to enforce the award. The court can order people held in a federal jail or other lawful place in the district until the award is obeyed or the consul or the foreign government puts the release in writing. The foreign government, or the consul who asked for the imprisonment, must pay jail and court costs. U.S. marshals must carry out the orders.
