Title 22 › Chapter 38— DEPARTMENT OF STATE › § 2715a
The Secretary of State must make sure the U.S. government finds and, when appropriate, shares information about the killing, kidnapping, torture, or other serious mistreatment of U.S. citizens abroad. That includes secret or classified material held by federal agencies. The Secretary must work with agency leaders so information is reviewed quickly and given to victims or their U.S. citizen family members unless sharing would harm sensitive sources or methods, national security, an ongoing criminal case, or is barred by law.
