Title 22 › Chapter 38— DEPARTMENT OF STATE › § 2715b
Consular officers must notify, or help the Secretary of State notify, the next of kin or guardian as soon as possible when a U.S. citizen or national dies abroad. For Peace Corps volunteers, service members, their dependents, or DoD employees, officers must assist the Peace Corps or military in notifying family. Officers may issue reports confirming or presuming death. The Secretary of State must make rules.
