Title 22 › Chapter 38— DEPARTMENT OF STATE › § 2716
If money is available, the Secretary of State must hire collectors to try to get back money people owe the United States from State Department activities, except debts owed by foreign countries, when the debt is more than 90 days past due. Those contracts must require the collector to give a progress report at least every 180 days, and the usual federal rules for collecting government debts apply unless they conflict. As allowed by law, the Secretary must report to the credit reporting agencies any State Department–related debt over $100 that is more than 31 days late.
