Up to 12 Senators must meet once each Congress with members of Japan’s Diet to talk about shared problems. The meetings will alternate between Japan and Washington, D.C. The Senators named for this work are called the United States group. The President of the Senate must appoint the Senators, including a Chair and Vice Chair, after recommendations from the Senate’s majority and minority leaders. Appointments last for that Congress. Up to $100,000 per Congress may be provided to pay expenses, paid on vouchers approved by the Chair. Each Congress the Chair must prepare and certify a report of the group’s spending. This rule starts in fiscal year 2008 and continues after that.
