Title 22 › Chapter 8— FOREIGN SERVICE BUILDINGS › § 292a
The State Department must install and show solar and other renewable energy systems on U.S. buildings overseas. The goals are to encourage host countries to use local renewable energy, create markets for U.S. systems and parts, speed up cooperation to build these systems quickly, and make important embassy equipment more reliable. The State Department must run these projects and pick them with help from the Energy Department. Projects can include heating and cooling, solar thermal and photovoltaic (solar panels), wind, and fuels from biomass. Each project must match local resources, climate, and costs, be open for inspection by local officials and citizens, and give priority to developing countries. When new overseas buildings are planned, renewable options must be considered. An extra $4,000,000 from the funds authorized by section 101(a)(1) is set aside for this work.
