Title 22 › Chapter 48— TAIWAN RELATIONS › § 3309
When the U.S. government is allowed or required by U.S. law to give something to, or receive something from, Taiwan, the President must deal with an entity set up by Taiwan if the President decides that entity has the legal power under Taiwan’s laws to act for Taiwan. The President is asked to give that Taiwan entity the same number of U.S. offices and staff that the Republic of China had here before January 1, 1979. If Taiwan gives similar legal protections to the Institute and its staff, the President can grant matching protections and any needed conditions to the Taiwan entity and its staff so they can do their jobs.
