Under the President’s direction, the chief of mission in a foreign country must be in charge of, coordinate, and supervise all U.S. government employees there, except Voice of America reporters on official duty and staff under a U.S. area military commander. The chief must stay fully up to date on government activities in that country and make sure those employees follow the chief’s instructions. Any U.S. agency with people in that country must keep the chief informed and ensure its staff follow the chief’s directions. The chief’s main jobs are to promote U.S. goods and services for export and to advance U.S. economic and commercial interests.
