Summary

The Director of the Foreign Service Institute must report to the Assistant Secretary for Human Resources about running, managing, and planning the training required under section 4021. The Institute must have at least four schools that meet the rules in this subchapter. The School of Professional and Area Studies teaches job-focused orientation, practical skills, and regional area studies, and runs new-employee orientation. The School of Leadership and Management Studies teaches leadership and crisis management. The School of Applied Information Technology Studies trains IT staff to run and maintain the Department’s computer and tech systems. The School of Foreign Languages provides language instruction as required by law and as directed by the Secretary.

(a)The Director of the Foreign Service Institute shall report to the Assistant Secretary for Human Resources for all matters pertaining to the management, execution, and strategy of the training and instruction required by section 4021 of this title.

(b)The Foreign Service Institute shall consist of at least four schools of instruction, which shall provide instruction consistent with the requirements set forth in this subchapter. The schools of instruction shall be as follows:

(1)The School of Professional and Area Studies, which shall provide job-specific orientation, tradecraft, and area studies, as well as new-hire orientation programs.

(2)The School of Leadership and Management Studies, which shall provide leadership and crisis management training.

(3)The School of Applied Information Technology Studies, which shall provide instruction to ensure information technology professionals have the up-to-date knowledge and skills required to operate and maintain the complex computer and technology systems employed by the Department.

(4)The School of Foreign Languages, which shall be responsible for providing language instruction as prescribed by law and at the direction of the Secretary.
