Consular officers must report and turn in all fees they collect for official work — like notary acts, taking depositions, handling estates, paying or receiving money, or caring for property — to the United States Treasury. Their pay comes only from the salary set by law. Vice‑consuls may, in addition to any pay they get as consuls or clerks, receive a share of the salary of the consul‑general or consul they serve, if rules allow it.
