Congress congratulates the people of Hungary for declaring the Republic of Hungary on October 23, 1989. The acting President made the announcement in Budapest’s Kossuth Square on the 33d anniversary of the 1956 revolution that was crushed by Soviet troops and spoke from the same balcony used by Imre Nagy, the 1956 revolutionary government’s Prime Minister. Congress says the 1956 uprising inspired Americans, that Hungary’s move toward a free, independent, and prosperous country has won U.S. sympathy and admiration, and it wants closer friendly ties between the peoples and governments of Hungary and the United States.
