§8727 Identification Of, and Immigration Restrictions On, Senior Officials of the Government of Iran and Their Family Members

Summary

The President must publish a list no later than 180 days after August 10, 2012, and then every year. The list names senior Iranian officials who are involved in illegal nuclear work or spreading weapons, who support international terrorism, or who commit serious human rights abuses, and it also names their family members. Senior officials include the Supreme Leader, the President, Cabinet members, members of the Assembly of Experts, senior intelligence officials, and senior members of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (including leaders of paramilitary groups such as Ansar-e-Hezbollah or Basij-e Motaz’afin). People on the list are to be denied U.S. visas and kept out of the country by the Secretaries of State and Homeland Security. An exception applies if admitting someone is needed for the United States to follow the Agreement between the United Nations and the United States about the U.N. Headquarters (signed June 26, 1947; entered into force November 21, 1947) or other international duties. The President may waive the rules for a person if the waiver is essential to U.S. national interests, but must notify Congress at least 7 days before the waiver takes effect and explain why.
