Title 22 › Chapter 106— CHAMPIONING AMERICAN BUSINESS THROUGH DIPLOMACY › § 9905
Embassy teams must meet with local U.S. and host-country private businesses to talk about problems at the border and get their practical advice and ideas for fixing trade barriers. The chief of mission must put written comments from local U.S. businesses into the mission’s trade plan sent to the State Department so those ideas help shape the joint trade strategy and any recommended funding. Each chief of mission must name one embassy contact to get business recommendations about carrying out the strategy and about trade problems that could disrupt commerce. Federal agencies must keep any proprietary materials labeled as confidential by a business secret unless the business knew it would be shared or later agreed to share. A public version with sensitive parts removed must also be provided. Such information is treated like trade secrets and won’t be released without the business’s clear permission.
