People, whether they work for the federal government or not, who give blood for transfusions, for blood banks, or for research tied to the care of someone whose treatment is paid by the government can be paid a reasonable amount, up to $50 for each blood withdrawal. The head of the department or independent agency decides the amount and pays from that agency’s medical and hospital supply funds. No payment is allowed when the blood is taken for the donor’s own care.
