People who get a scholarship under the related program may work for the Indian Health Service during school breaks. That work will not count toward any service obligation they owe because of the scholarship. Students in health professions may also be employed by the Service during nonacademic periods, but no more than one hundred and twenty days in a calendar year. These jobs do not have to follow the usual competitive hiring rules. The work must give practical experience in the student’s field. Workers must be paid a salary comparable to the competitive system and are not counted against hiring limits for the Service or the Department of Health and Human Services.
