The Secretary must search Interior Department records to find people owed any part of unauthorized payments and figure out how much each person should get. If the Secretary finds a person’s name and location, the Secretary must pay that amount right away, with interest as provided in section 2302, without requiring a formal claim. The Secretary must try to notify each person by the best means available, such as direct notice, telling next of kin, notifying the tribal chair or CEO, or publishing a notice in local newspapers.
