Title 25 › Chapter 7— EDUCATION OF INDIANS › § 292b
The Bureau of Indian Affairs must stop paying to run secondary schools or programs in Alaska after June 30, 1983. The BIA will keep talking with affected villages about moving day schools to the State, but villages do not have to agree for the State to create one statewide school system. After June 30, 1984, the BIA may fund no more than ten day schools in Alaska. After June 30, 1985, the BIA will fund none. The State of Alaska can receive $9,350,000, available until spent, to help repair or rebuild BIA-owned schools it takes over. That same $9,350,000 from Public Law 97–394 may be used for reconstruction. If a contracted day school is transferred, the State must take over the contract for at least two years or until the contract ends, whichever comes first. Other federal aid under the Act of April 16, 1934 or other laws can still be given to these schools like other public schools.
