Title 25 › Chapter 32— NATIVE AMERICAN GRAVES PROTECTION AND REPATRIATION › § 3004
Federal agencies and museums that hold Native American unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, or objects of cultural patrimony must give a written summary of those items using their records. The summary must describe how big the collection is, the kinds of items, where they came from, how and when they were acquired, and any cultural connections that are known. The summary replaces an item-by-item inventory. It must be followed by talks with tribal governments, Native Hawaiian organizations, and traditional religious leaders, and it had to be finished by November 16, 1993. Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations can ask to see records, catalogs, and studies to learn about geographic origin, cultural ties, and how items were acquired; the information must be shared in a reasonable way agreed to by everyone.
