Title 25 › Chapter 40— INDIAN DAMS SAFETY › § 3801
Congress says the Secretary of the Interior found 53 dams on Indian lands that could threaten people if they failed. Past neglect of Bureau of Indian Affairs dams left some unsafe, and many need repairs even if they are not now labeled dangerous. Safe dams are needed for irrigation, flood control, town and industry water, household and livestock use, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Congress says a regular dam maintenance and repair program must be started using experts from the Bureau, Indian tribes, and other federal agencies.
