Title 25 › Chapter 45— PROTECTION OF INDIANS AND CONSERVATION OF RESOURCES › § 5124
The Secretary of the Interior can give a tribe a corporate charter if the tribe asks. The tribe’s governing body must approve the charter before it starts. The charter lets the tribe deal with real and personal property, including buying restricted Indian lands and exchanging corporate interests for them. Trust or restricted reservation lands may not be sold, mortgaged, or leased for more than 25 years, and only an Act of Congress can cancel the charter.
