If the U.S. attorney asks, the court must give money posted for a defendant’s bail to the U.S. attorney to pay assessments, fines, restitution, or penalties and must not release it after conviction before sentencing unless no money can be imposed or release would cause undue hardship; excludes third‑party sureties (people who post bail for others).
