The Attorney General can appoint an acting U.S. trustee when a region’s trustee job is empty. That acting trustee can serve until the vacancy is filled by a regular appointment or by a trustee picked to cover extra regions. The Attorney General can also designate a U.S. trustee to serve in up to two regions, and that person may serve as long as the public interest requires.
