Full-time U.S. magistrate judges must not work as lawyers or hold any other job that would get in the way of doing their judicial duties quickly, properly, and fairly. Part-time U.S. magistrate judges must do the judicial work required by law. While serving they may be lawyers, but they cannot represent anyone in any federal criminal case and must follow any other limits the conference sets. They may have other jobs only if those jobs do not interfere with their duties.
