§655 Arbitrators

Title 28 › Part III— COURT OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES › Chapter 44— ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION › § 655

Last updated Apr 5, 2026|Official source

Summary

Arbitrators chosen under section 654 have the power, inside the same federal court district that sent the case, to hold arbitration hearings, to administer oaths or affirmations, and to issue awards. Each district court that allows arbitration must set rules for certifying arbitrators and must certify them under those rules and this chapter; the rules must require taking the oath in section 453 and following the disqualification rules in section 455. Arbitrators act in a judge-like role and have the same legal immunity and protections as others in that role.
