The Supreme Court can pick a marshal, set the marshal’s pay, and remove the marshal. With the Chief Justice’s approval, the marshal can hire needed assistants and custodial staff and set their pay. The marshal must attend Court sessions; serve and carry out Court orders and legal papers; look after U.S. property used by the Court; pay bills for building work when the Architect of the Capitol certifies them; pay for books and repairs when the Court librarian certifies them; pay salaries and other Court payments under the Chief Justice’s direction; pay printing and travel for lawyers for people allowed to proceed without fees or for lawyers the Court appoints when the clerk certifies the bills; and manage the Supreme Court Police.
