§2703 Definitions

Defines key terms used in the chapter. "Advanced workplace practices" means new ways of organizing work to boost performance, like high-performance systems, flexible production, quality programs, ongoing improvement, team decision making, closer supplier and customer ties, and combining technology, worker skills, and training—plus other similar features the Secretary of Labor, with the Secretary of Commerce, says fit. "Advanced workplace technologies" means either equipment and software such as numerically controlled machine tools, robots, automated controls, and computer-flexible manufacturing systems that push the field forward, or new industrial or business methods that raise quality and productivity (for example, better design, quality checks, continuous production, inventory control, worker training, and improved customer/supplier communication). "Department" means the Department of Labor. "Secretary" means the Secretary of Labor. "Nonprofit organization" means a tax-exempt group described in paragraph (3), (4), or (5) of section 501(c) of title 26. "Worker organization" means a labor organization as described in section 501(c)(5) of title 26.
