Title 29 › Chapter 15— OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH › § 658
After an inspection or investigation finds a violation of a safety requirement, the Secretary or an authorized official must give the employer a written citation. The citation must say exactly what rule, standard, order, or regulation was broken and set a reasonable deadline to fix it. For very minor problems that do not affect safety or health, the Secretary can make rules to issue a short notice instead of a citation. Copies of each citation must be posted where the violation happened. No citation can be issued more than six months after the violation occurred.
