Title 30 › CHAPTER 23 — GEOTHERMAL RESOURCES › § 1028
Defines "enhanced geothermal systems" by pointing to the definition in 42 U.S.C. 17191. The Interior Department, through the U.S. Geological Survey and with help from the Energy Department, must set up a joint government–private program to study and promote hot dry rock geothermal energy on public lands and on lands run by the Department of Agriculture, except lands taken out of geothermal leasing. The program must find and map areas with high potential, share information on how to develop them safely and economically, and can make contracts or agreements to help public or private groups do related projects. The USGS must also update its 2008 geothermal assessment to give finer detail on temperatures and depths for power and direct use, estimate coproduction of energy and minerals, add data for underground thermal storage, make high‑resolution maps (including induced seismicity risk), and coordinate with States, Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hawaii, and universities. Congress may fund what is needed to run the program.
