§1230 Eligibility Criteria

Summary

The Committee decides which colleges or universities can take part as mining and mineral resources research institutes. To be eligible, a school must have a strong graduate program in mining or closely related fields with a record of success, show institutional commitment to this work, be able to get significant cooperation from industry, and have a mining or mineral extraction engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology or show equivalent capability to the Committee. Schools already found eligible on October 12, 1988 remain eligible but must be reviewed at least once during the period allowed by the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute Amendments of 1988, with the review results submitted by January 15, 1992 under section 11(a)(2). Generic mineral technology centers set up by the Secretary must be made of eligible institutes and existing centers must also have at least one review before January 15, 1992 under section 11(a)(3).
