Title 30 › Chapter 25— SURFACE MINING CONTROL AND RECLAMATION › Subchapter III— STATE MINING AND MINERAL RESOURCES RESEARCH INSTITUTES › § 1230a
The Secretary of the Interior must set up a Strategic Resources Mineral Technology Center to help the United States rely less on foreign supplies of strategic and critical minerals. The center must study and improve ways to extract and refine minerals, find substitute materials, save minerals by recycling and better processing and making parts, locate new mineral deposits, and share its research and technologies with private companies. The center must be placed at a university that does not already have a similar center, that offers advanced degrees in geology, geological engineering, metallurgical engineering, and mining engineering, that has materials and advanced processing research expertise, and that is west of the 100th meridian. Funding may be provided as needed to carry out these actions.
