The Secretary of the Interior, under rules he makes, can give a qualified applicant an exclusive permit to prospect for certain potassium salts on U.S. land up to two years. A permit cannot exceed 2,560 compact acres. Lands in or adjacent to Searles Lake, California are excluded and may be leased.
