Permits splitting 40‑acre legal parcels into 10‑acre tracts and lets people or groups with touching claims join those claims, even if each claim is under 10 acres. Placer claims filed after July 9, 1870, cannot exceed 160 acres per person or group, must follow U.S. surveys, and do not cancel homestead claims or let anyone sell a settler’s improvements.
