Title 31 › SUBTITLE III — FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT › CHAPTER 37 — CLAIMS › SUBCHAPTER III — CLAIMS AGAINST THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT › § 3722
The Attorney General can settle and pay up to $1,000 for a claim by an officer or employee at a U.S. government prison or correctional institution for personal property that was damaged or lost while doing their job. A claim won’t be allowed for loss in housing the person lived in if that housing was not provided by the government. A claim can be paid only if the loss was not caused by the person or their agent, the Attorney General finds it was reasonable for them to have the property, and a written claim is filed within one year of the loss. Payment is made only if the claimant accepts the settlement as full payment. Money may be appropriated to pay these claims.
