Title 31 › Subtitle SUBTITLE IV— MONEY › Chapter 51— COINS AND CURRENCY › Subchapter II— GENERAL AUTHORITY › § 5113
The Treasury Secretary can set reasonable manufacturing tolerances for the specs for dollar, half dollar, quarter, and dime coins, except where a spec is a strict limit. The 5‑cent coin’s weight may vary by up to 0.194 gram and the 1‑cent coin’s weight may vary by up to 0.13 gram. Any gold coin must contain the full gold weight shown on the coin. The Secretary must keep records of the type, number, and weight of each batch of coins and test some from each batch to check the official weight. If the tested coins don’t meet the weight, the Secretary must either weigh every coin and mark and melt the ones that fail into bars for reminting, or may melt down the whole batch.
