U.S. disbursing officials and officers of national banks must stamp or mark any counterfeit bill presented to them with the words "counterfeit", "altered", or "worthless." If they wrongly mark a real U.S. bill — including Federal Reserve or national bank notes — they must pay its face value when the bill is presented.
